On March 8th, International Women’s Day, the Modern Women’s Foundation released the result of a recent survey. It found that 43% of Taiwan’s women polled have been sexually harassed in the workplace, but only 10% of these females reported the incidents to their companies.
According to the respondents, they were subjected to physical and verbal harassment, such as staring, unwelcome advances, and sexually inappropriate images or messages. Of those polled, 41.7% were harassed by superiors, while 39.3% by coworkers.
Even under the Act of Gender Equality in Employment, over 80% of companies still failed to take proper action to correct the issue immediately after the complaint. And nearly half of the cases reported to the Taipei Government’s Department of Labor have been withdrawn in the end owing to pressure from superiors.
