Retail giant Amazon just received permission from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to operate its Prime Air drone fleet to deliver packages to customers’ doorsteps.
Though not mentioning specifically when it will launch the autonomous drone delivery service to all its customers, the company continues testing the technology, which has been in development for many years. With advanced spatial awareness technology, the latest electric drone that Amazon introduced in a conference last year can fly up to 15 miles and carry packages under 5 pounds.
Same-day delivery, available now in many places, is not fast enough for Amazon. Its goal is to deliver goods to customers within 30 minutes. With this certification, the day they realize this vision might not be far away.
