American poet Louise Glück won the Nobel prize for literature in 2020. She is the first American woman to win this honor in 27 years, and the 16th woman to win the Nobel.
Louise Glück was born in New York City in 1943. She has taught poetry in many universities, and is currently an adjunct professor of English at Yale.
The 77-year-old writer is one of America’s leading poets, having also won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. Her major themes include childhood and family life.
The Nobel Prize committee said that Glück has a “candid and uncompromising” voice, which is “full of humor and biting wit.”
