Famous entrepreneur Elon Musk shared footage released by his brain-computer startup, Neuralink, showing a monkey playing the simple video game “Mind Pong” with only its mind.
The 9-year-old male monkey, Pager, was implanted with chips on each side of his brain. The chips can record and decode the electric signals from Pager’s brain to predict his intention. After several weeks of practice, now Pager can control the paddle on the monitor by just thinking about moving his hand upward or downward.
Although this technology is still in its early stages, “First @Neuralink product will enable someone with paralysis to use a smartphone with their mind faster than someone using thumbs,” Musk said in a tweet. Neuralink hopes its brain chips can, later on, help cure neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s and dementia.
