The humble baguette, France’s staple bread, is being added to the United Nation’s intangible cultural heritage list by Paris-based U.N. heritage body UNESCO as a cherished tradition to be preserved by humanity for its artisanal know-how and culture of baguette bread.
UNESCO chief Audrey Azoulay said, this “celebrates the French way of life: the baguette is a daily ritual, a structuring element of the meal, synonymous with sharing and conviviality.”
The baguette is a symbol of France around the world and has been a central part of the French diet for at least 100 years. France bakers seemed proud and delighted with this decision.
