A giant aquarium in the lobby of a hotel in Berlin has burst, flooding the hotel and nearby streets. Two people were injured and 1,500 fish were dead.
The nearly 16m-high “AquaDom” contains a million liters of water and was described as the largest free-standing cylindrical aquarium in the world. It also contained a clear-walled elevator for visitors. AquaDom was opened in December 2003 and was last modernized in 2020.
Berlin Fire Department said more than 100 firefighters were sent to thescene and it was not clear what caused the break. There has been speculation that freezing temperatures may have caused a crack in the tank.
