Taiwan’s government unveiled a new passport cover design, enlarging the English word for TAIWAN and highlighting it in bold font. The word TAIWAN is repositioned closely above the word PASSPORT to draw attention at first glance. The size of the English ‘REPUBLIC OF CHINA’ (ROC), the country’s official name, has been significantly reduced and moved to circle the national emblem in the center of the cover. Meanwhile, the Chinese characters of ROC (「中華民國」) remain at the top of the cover.
By emphasizing TAIWAN over CHINA, Taiwanese citizens can avoid confusion with China when traveling abroad. The government is going to issue passports with the new cover design in January 2021. The current passports are still valid until they expire, according to Taiwan Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮).
