The University of Cambridge has become the first university in the UK to keep lectures online for the entire 2020-21 academic year because of the coronavirus pandemic. Only some in-person classes may take place as long as social distancing can be followed.
Universities can still charge full fees even if courses are taught online. However, some students do not want to pay full fare if they cannot benefit from the full college experience of in-person instruction and extracurricular activities. Lockdowns and travel bans also cut off the flow of international students, who pay higher fees and are thus a major source of income for U.K. universities. Universities are likely to face a financial crisis as a result.
