South Korea’s first openly transgender soldier was found dead at her home. A year ago, the country’s military discharged her for getting sex-reassignment surgery.
Byun Hee-soo was only 22 years old and a former army staff sergeant. She rose to prominence for seeking to remain in South Korea’s military after the surgery. Ms. Byun had voluntarily enlisted in 2017, but the military expelled her after her sex-reassignment surgery, citing military code that classified removal or damage of one’s genitals as an indication of physical or mental imbalance.
Civic groups and activists mourned the death of Ms. Byun and called for change in the military to better protect LGBT rights.
