Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post (南華早報) recently published an article on April 20th, titled “Taiwan wants to be bilingual by 2030, lifting English proficiency to take ‘another step’ to aid economy.” The article outlines how Taiwan continues to struggle and compete with other Asian countries in the region like Hong Kong,Singapore,Thailand, and India.
Taiwan’s DPP government has allocated NT$30 billion (US$1 billion) of spending over the next 5 years to support this initiative, which includes specific targets for compulsory education and the promotion of bilingualism in the civil service. The move is expected to make Taiwan more attractive to investors and tourists, and also help domestic companies seek more business overseas.

He further notes that, “Taiwan has plenty of academically smart, positive, and hardworking students, but unless they dramatically improve their levels of English, study abroad, or gain more international experiences, they will continue to underperform their peers from other Asian countries.”
