Japanese students take esport English lessons at home when school is suspended

More and more children are stuck at home due to school closures during the COVID-19 pandemic. Parents have been fretting about how to keep their kids from feeling bored and, on the other hand, to guide them to spend time positively.

Gecipe Inc., a Japanese startup, saw the demand and rolled out a remote e-sports English program for students last year that has attracted a waiting list of hundreds.

The lessons are given by coaches who speak fluent English and Japanese and also have excellent gaming skills. Students have to communicate with the coach and others in English while playing popular online games as a team in the 80-minute lessons, which make it more fun to practice the language. Children taking the lessons look more forward to these sessions than before, according to the CEO of Gecipe.
